Who’s Who: Jeff Kinney

I think if everyone would write down the funny stories from their own childhoods, the world would be a better place.” -Jeff Kinney

Jeff Kinney.jpgHello, my name is Nikole and I’m a 21 year old who is in love with Diary of a Wimpy Kid. And so, this week’s “Who’s Who” is a tribute to the great Jeff Kinney.

Mr. Kinney hails from Maryland, but now he lives in Massachusetts with his wife and kids. Initially, he wanted to be a newspaper cartoonist, but was largely unsuccessful. He began working on sketches of Diary of a Wimpy Kid in the late 90s, which later became a daily internet comic series. In 2007, the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid book was published and became a best seller overnight. As of today, there now 11 installments in the series, with the most recent book coming out this past Tuesday.

wk1This series came out when I was in 7th grade, so it’s pretty much been a fixture of my adolescent years. The main character, Greg Heffley, is your typical middle school kid–he loves video games, fights with his siblings, doesn’t exactly excel at anything. But through his diary, we see all of his inner monologues and come to realize that deep down, we are all Greg. (See passage on the right!) This series makes me want to keep a journal of all my snarky thoughts and feelings and drawings of stick people. Jeff Kinney does a wonderful job of writing in a young teenager’s voice.

Overall, I would have to say that the best part about this series is that it is enjoyable for people of all ages. We like it because we can all relate to Greg’s struggles. Whether we liked it or not, at some point we all went through that awkward middle school stage where we were trying to find ourselves. This series is perfect because Jeff Kinney can make light of that struggle and make us laugh at our own memories. Also, this passage from The Last Straw about Shel Silverstein cracks me up every time. wk2.png

And guess what! This series has films! The first two were really cute, but the third one was kind of a dud. Also, they’re recasting all the parts for the upcoming fourth movie so I am not very pleased about that. Watch with your own discretion.
